Good Points

Clear, liquid, 3D soundstage, timing and dynamics, makes music pure and simple

Bad Points

looks very plain, not the deepest bass, very fussy over front end. Sounds ordinary with cheaper CD players.

General Comments

The Pioneer A300r precision amplifier sounds pretty wonderful with matching Precision CD player. Sounded ordinary with Marantz 63se and Sony 920e. Tried amps from Audiolab (pre-power) more slam but less music. Arcam 9 pre-power (no dynamics in comparison).
Amp is future proof also through further Tom Evans upgrades.

Pioneer A300R Precision was a joint project by Pioneer UK and Tom Evans Audio. It is based on the production model but used superior MOD components that cost several times more and employed time consuming component matching. There was also the more powerful A400GTE model, built along the same lines. But time has moved on and Tom Evans Audio is no longer involved with these models. Some parts are available from SEME, the official parts agent for Pioneer.

The A300R precision was excellent in its original form. Tom Evans does further modifications, which improve resolution and timing. It is incredible how much detail it reveals in recordings, and how lifelike they become.

Pioneer A300R Precision was a much improved model over the original A300 and the A300X models. Tom Evans was involved with the development. Tom Evans still do a secondary upgrade to the A300R/P that he calls the 'Full Monte' upgrade!
