Good Points

A good way of getting yourself 'known' over a wider geographic area.

Bad Points

1. System generated, or spoof, winks from abroad.
2 . Emails not answered, even to say 'No thank you'
3 . Non-current profiles still visible on site - I actually checked this out with someone that I know that had been on Match, but had left 6 months previously.

General Comments

I first joined Match.com in 2007, and after a few 'false starts' I met someone and eventually cancelled my subscription with no problem. However, the relationship didn't work out and so I joined again in early 2009.

I was surprised to see a lot of profiles still on Match from 2007, and to the best of my recollection the profiles were unchanged in that 2 year period. On first re-joining I received quite a number of emails and winks, although the winks were predominantly from young women in the States, who looked like models/film stars! I have since noticed that these winks seem to arrive everytime I update my profile - are they system generated?

I have sent out a good number of emails to suitable people within the 50-mile radius that I stipulated on my profile, and have not recieved one single reply, so I widened the radius and sent some more emails, and have had one or two replies.

I have come to the opinion that there are a lot of 'dead' profiles on Match that have been retained since the members have left the site, and also that there may be a lot of members who are visible on the site, but cannot respond to emails for one reason or another - I keep receiving a wink from the same woman every week, but despite emailing her on two occasions she has not responded, and indeed, according to my message box, hasn't read the emails that I sent her.

Having read some of the other reviewer's comments, I do believe that there is a 'certain' amount of over-exaggeration in the Match advertising campaign, and that a lot of the members visible on the site are actually no longer 'current'. As a result of 3 months writing emails, and waiting for something to happen, I have decided to cancel my subscription.

P.S. I have actually met more people by just getting out and about, and have had a number of non-Match dates, and have now found someone with whom I am in a relationship with.

I found this review helpful because... my experience was pretty much the same

John I totally agree - I've been really careful writing my profile (I'm a journalist so should be half-literate!) and I have ensured I've uploaded decent photos (nothing mad/drunk/foolish). I know I'm not a bad looking chap and have had many lovely girlfriends in te past.

I believed in the 'science' of a site like this - that of many thousands of like-minded people you'd be bound to find someone perfect for you. I've also been 'winked' at lots, replied to them: and subsequently had NOTHING back from anyone. Over 40 emails - many responding to winks - and NO response. I totally agree with you, too, that just getting out and about is far more effective. :-)

I agree with everything you say, as my experience with Match - and other online 'Dating' websites has been equally frustrating.
