General Comments

I have been insured with Swinton for a number of years, out of laziness more than anything. Anyway, in these cash strapped times I thought I'd better check the market so I got an online quote from one of the price comparison sites. This came back with one £100 cheaper than Swinton. As it was nearly my renewal date Swinton rang me as they always do - they are a paragon of efficiency in this respect. I challenged them with the online quote which clearly irritated the chap on the phone who started to deliver a spiel about how poor online brokers are etc.
At any rate he said he'd try to match it so he asked me to confirm a few details. Everything was the same as last time asside from the fact that I wanted my wife down as main driver. Occupation ceramic artist. Never made any claims between the two of us. Chap on phone goes away for ages keeping me on hold and when he finally comes back just as I was about to put the phone down declares that there is a problem.
'Problem ?' I say. '
Yes, ' says he. 'Your insurer doesn't insure artists so I've cancelled your policy.'
'Cancelled my policy ? Like you mean we aren't covered, but my wife's driving the car as we speak !'
Anyway, at this point I hung up telling him I'd get my insurance elsewhere - which I did.
Thinking he might have been telling porkies, I rang MMA Insurance the following day and spoke to one of their underwriters who informed me that they did not insure artists of any kind, either performing artists, or painting artists, or presumably by implicationsstained glass makers, sculpters, fire-jugglers, calligraphers.... you get the idea. 'Why ?' I asked was this. MMA lady went away to discuss with colleague and returned to tell me that this was incase said artist might be carrying a valuable item in the car which might get damaged in the event of an accident. Yes, that was the lame reason I got. OK, so what if I'm a trapeze artist ? What valuable item other than my leotard am I likely to be carrying in my vehicle when driving ? Or perhaps they think I'm going to steering with my feet.

My thesis is this - and it's not just aimed at Swinton, they are after all just a broker. The worst thing I could charge them with is overcharging.
