Derby branch is pleasantly situated at the bottom of Friargate and has a nice, outdoor seating area and bright attractive decor inside. BOGOF voucher on the Tapas to Share menu meant it came in at £6.50 a head, which was fairly painless. I wouldn't want to pay any more than this, though.
Slow service, nowhere near enough staff, constantly ringing phone and unspeakably bad food.
Recently visited La Tasca in Derby for the first time. Not being well versed in Spanish food, I was really looking forward to trying something different. One of our party of four had got a BOGOF voucher for the Tapas to Share menu, so it seemed like a good deal. What a disappointment! We had booked a table and arrived on time, only to be kept standing around by the sole waitress whilst she finished a conversation on her mobile. She did say it was the manager, but so what? Customers is customers! Step away from the phone! We all ordered three tapas dishes each, which took the best part of an hour to arrive by which time we were ravenous. I ordered chicken in white wine and garlic sauce, which was revolting. It looked like one of those five for £4 microwave dinners you get, but didn't taste nearly as good - that's how bad it was. My second choice was deep fried squid with garlic mayonnaise and this too was dreadful to the point of being almost inedible. There was a tiny little squirt of vinegary-tasting mayonnaise and the squid themselves smelled and tasted really strong and fishy, not like any squid I've had before. They were also very chewy, like deep fried rubber bands. I managed three before giving up. The third and final dish was something called mushroom croquettes which looked like little fried meatballs, but which contained a deeply unpleasant mush of some sort. I ate half of one and left the rest.
All through the meal we were plagued by the loud, shrill and very annoying ringing of the restaurant's phone, which was situated on a wall right by our table. As there was only one waitress on, there was obviously nobody to answer it and we had to endure its endless racket the whole time we were there. We then had to wait ages for the bill and all I can say is thank goodness we had got the BOGOF vouchers because I would have been seriously displeased at having to pay full whack for this rubbish. We would have been better off going to the greasy spoon cafe across the road. My recommendation? If you're looking to try Spanish food, give this joint an extremely wide berth and find an independent, non-chain restaurant instead.
