I never thought I could be just so overwhelmed by a bunch of people singing. The hype made me see it at the cinema, but before I sat down I didn't even know it was going to be a musical, I mean I really hate musicals, but this was incredible. It wasn't so much that it was great singing, because it wasn't or even good acting but I was totally captivated by the great direction, camera work and incredible pace of the movie. For me Jim Broadbent's performance as the owner of the theatre, made him the star of the show, he seemed to be the only one who managed to survive this extravaganza. Nicole Kidman tried but really just seemed to cling on and Ewan McGregor, well he was trying too although he seemed out of his depth. Undoubtedly though it was the breakneck pace of the action that made this film and it just left the whole audience breathless and amazed, I felt like I'd just run 5 miles by the time the credits rolled. I've pre-ordered my copy and just can't wait - I'm sure I'll be watching it again and again - and I'm looking forward to the excercise.

This also happened to us. We had no idea it was a musical when we have first seen this movie at the cinema. I like musicals but my husband isn't really a fan, but he ended up loving it. I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. I also bought the DVD, music CD and I have watched it over and over for tens of times.
Best regards from Canada!

A really professional review there Amazon Customer and I'll see if its available for rental as I really like musicals.
I must assume, despite the title, that the film bears no resemblance to the Jose Ferrer dir. John Huston job which I enjoyed immensely. Saw that in 1952 and subsequently on TV.
