Good Points

rapid weight loss

Bad Points

A totall abstinence diet which is antisocial & fails to address food as a critical part of everyday life. You are not even allowed to discuss food!
Well researched evidence demonstrates that rapid weight loss via a VLCD triggers 'body starvation', metabolic rate is lowered and when food is introduced again body goes in to storage overdrive, this equates to rapid weight gain.

General Comments

I completed LighterLife foundation September 2008, lost 3 stone and dropped from BMI 33 to BMI 27. Maintained weight loss until Christmas 2008, when I began to introduce 'trigger' foods - bread & chocolate, in small quantities. February 2008 I had re-gained 9 lb, so re-joined a LL development group....all attendees had re gained large amounts of weight in a short space of time! The counsellor was new to me, she had a punitive approach and promoted the importance of abstinence, almost accusing us of not being able to be trustred with food. This provoked my inner 'rebellious child'. I saw my GP and she explained that despite the VLCD being a good motivator in the first instance,a diet that fails to acknowledge food as a central part of life inadvertently promotes this negative behaviour. The CBT was not strong enough and I had become locked in a battle with the very thing we all need to stay alive...food. The rapid weight gain was a result of a lowered metabolic rate following the starvation.

I am now following a hypnotherapeutic approach with professional counselling and I am adhering to a medically prescribed low GI diet which accommodates my lifestyle and has made me appreciate good quality food.
