Good Points

Convenient location (for me at least).

Bad Points

Expensive, grubby, unhelpful staff.

General Comments

I originally joined Esporta Swiss Cottage as my partner was already a member (she joined when it originally opened). The monthly cost was considerably more than other gyms in the area, but unlike the others, Esporta was less than five minutes walk away. At the time, around 2005, the facilities were on a par with the privately run but council owned gym that I used to attend before moving to London, with the notable exception of the swimming pool which is much smaller.

I was prepared to pay the extra for the convenience of a gym so nearby, but from 2007 onwards the facilities and staffing have deteroriated rapidly. Staff numbers dropped, and experienced staff were replaced with college leavers. These spend most of their time hanging around the bar or chatting amongst themselves rather than monitoring the facilities or answering member queries. Ultimately, the outside staff all disappeared, leaving the inexperienced college leavers to run a smaller set of classes.

Equipment, particularly the free weights, are not replaced when they break. Swiss Cottage Esporta does seem to suffer from some exceptionally inconsiderate members who leave weights scattered across the floor, but this is not helped by the inattentive staff.

The male changing rooms and showers are always dirty, with missing and damp ceiling tiles. The toilets, never very clean from the time I joined, now smell so strongly of stale urine that I prefer not to use them.

My partner decided to leave Esporta, at which point she was told she would have to give three months notice. We checked her contract, and found that it stated a one month notice period as she joined before the three month notice period was introduced. Esporta denied this, and threatened to take her to court if she did not pay. With the threat of a solicitors letter from us, they relented.
