Good Points

Gorgeous, tasty bread with no effort. Easy to clean. Easy to work.

Bad Points

The timer bleeper is far too quiet and with 3 kids at times I cannot hear it even when I am in the kitchen if they are being rowdy. I get round this by setting my (Neff) cooker timer to go off a minute or 2 before the loaf is due out.

General Comments

I bought the Panasonic SD255 Breadmaker just under a year ago, having become fed-up of the rising price of tasteless supermarket bread. Since then I have only bought one or two loaves - and even premium loaves pale in comparison to what my machine makes. I bake 2 or 3 loaves a week, usually wholemeal. My 3 children (2 teenagers) now prefer packed lunches to canteen/supermarket lunches. I used to regularly throw stale bread out for the birds, this never happens now and even the crusts get eaten.
It takes 5 hours to make a wholemeal loaf, but the timer option is good so you can get up in the morning to the smell of fresh bread.
I have found that some flours are better than others (the book that comes from the machine also warns about this) and generally you get what you pay for. I get almost 3 loaves froma bag of flour costing just over £1. I have also found that at times you have to slightly vary the amount of water used by 10ml or so, depending on the flour.
The 'fast-bake' option is handy, but I have found that the white loaves are not quite well-done enough on this setting (it still gets eaten though).
The raisin dispenser option is handy - and although I don't use it much the seeded loaves and Italian-type breads you can make with things added are to die for.
All in all - this is the best kitchen gadget I own. I wouldn't be without it!
