ce79's Review of Dollar Car Rental Car Hire

Overall Rating

3.5 stars
  • Value for money
    4.5 stars
  • Country & City of hire
    Houston, USA
  • Choice of vehicles
    Excellent
  • Date of hire (month/year)
    March 2009
  • Condition of vehicle
    Excellent

A member of the garage staff was sweet. When she saw us struggling to get all out bags (and 2 children) into the 'midsize' we had booked, she simply told us to put the car back and swap it for an SUV. I rented with Dollar from Houston airport (IAH), for 3 weeks in March 2009. What I hadn't anticipated is that Dollar wanted to charge extra for"Roadside Assistance"!! I have never, ever, hired a car and been charged extra for this. They wanted $6 per day. On a 3 week hire, this would have amounted to $130. Completely outrageous in my view. I declined the cover and was fortunate not to have to argue their liability with them from the roadside!
I was also charged $5 on return for the shuttle bus fee - I don't recall seeing this in the small print either.
Anticipating the usual insurance sell at the desk I had taken out an annual policy with WorldwideInsure.com, which I'm sure saved me a fortune.

    Follow-up to this review: Dollar replied to my email within 3 days, and:
    (1) refunded the bus charge;
    (2) explained that the roadside cover I was being offered was just a 'top-up' option covering accident towing, lock-out, flat battery, etc. That obviously makes a lot more sense. On the day I got no explanation of what was included in the standard rental fee, and I was (either deliberately or carelessly!) left with the impression that nothing was included.
