The HD picture quality is excellent (when the box works). That's the only reason I have not given SKY HD a zero rating...
...Because the quality of the components used in the boxes that Sky offers (manufactured by Pace, Samsung and Thomson), seem very poor - causing them to consistently fail.
Faults include: box does not respond to remote; fails to record when in standby mode; fails to switch on from standby (requiring a lengthy switch-off-at-mains-switch-back-on-at-mains procedure to 'wake it up'). In short, these boxes are a real pain to use!
Here's an account of my recent experience in upgrading to Sky+ HD: I recently decided to upgrade from Sky+ when the price was dropped to £49 for the box with a £30 installation fee - and I really, really wish I hadn't!
Here's what happened - The first box the engineer installed did not react to the remote, so the he immediately replaced it with another box. This box initially seemed fine, but soon after the engineer left it started failing to react to the remote again. It also failed to record TV programmes when left on standby. I called Sky customer support who arranged for another engineer to install a third new box. This box also consistently malfunctioned in the same way as the first two boxes! I called the engineer back myself and arranged for yet another box to be installed and guess what? This one had all the same faults too!
So, in total I had four Sky+ HD boxes in a row (3 Samsung and 1 Thomson) that didn't work properly. Sky customer services seemed unable to give me an explanation as to why they are providing their customers with such second-rate equipment. I have since cancelled my Sky subscription altogether and have moved to Freesat with Humax HDR box that works perfectly. I'd urge anyone having these problems with Sky+ HD to do the same.
