I have now been driving for 4 years and been insured with Direct Line from the Start. My Dad was the named driver on my first car because of my age, experience it was too high to get insured on my own. But their tv adverts and staff on the phones insured us that I would be building up my no claims. However, after two years I finally brought a better car and tried to insure myself as the named driver - BUT I was told I had no claims discount, I was only building up a no claims BONUS!! Its different - yes I get a discount with them every year because of this bonus but its still not anywhere near the price of having two years no claims to your name!
Now four years on I nearly have three years no claims and I have just brought my 3rd car, I paid the deposit on Saturday call Direct Line today (Monday). Prior to buying this car I did ask them if my insurance would rocket with buying a bigger engine car and they said no - great news! Phoned today and now they wont even insure me because the car has modifications - only has alloys that aren't Hyundai and I am under 25 years old! They said unless I buy the original alloys to put back on the car then they wont insure me! I couldn't believe this, I am due to collect the car on Saturday, so I will have to pay a cancellation fee to get out of my current car insurance with Direct Line of £25 and find another insurance company.

Good news though, if you are under 25 and have modifications to a car there are other companies willing to insure you and I have found them to be very reasonable prices:

I won't be racing back to Direct Line for car insurance anytime soon!
