Good Points

A reasonable copy of the traditional timber sliding sash window.

Bad Points

Very poor WER energy rating for thermal performance, installation problems and manufacturing problems meant that the sliding sashes did not fit properly and had to be replaced. It took more than 4 inspections from Everest and I had to commission an independent expert witness before Everest would agree that they were at fault.

General Comments

The Everest timber sliding sash, having an "E" WER Energy Rating, is one of the lowest performing, in terms of energy efficiency, of the double glazed timber sliding sash design available on the market. There are several other companies in the UK who offer the same traditional design with higher thermal performance, but I chose Everest because when I was buying the windows they said to me that they didn't offer any windows with lower than a "B" energy rating -- this turned out to be true, but very misleading, since the timber sliding sash was not actually rated at the time of my enquiry. I found their claim to be misleading because it sounded to me as if none of Everest's windows would perform to lower than a "B" rating and I therefore assumed my timber sliding sashes would have at least the performance of a "B" rating, particularly since they omitted to mention that the timber sliding sash was not yet at that time rated or that it might perform to lower than a "B" rating if it was formally rated.

It was additionally disappointing that the windows were supplied without the traditional "horns" that are such an important feature of the original sliding sashes, and that the new window units were significantly taller than the originals. This additional window height caused problems in hanging curtains and keeping the light out because the new windows finished at ceiling level, whereas the original windows allowed an approximately 200mm space between ceiling and window top for a curtain rail to be placed!

Ultimately, Everest did apologize for the need to fit new correctly sized sashes, but I have received no apology yet for having been sold "E" rated windows (the bare legal minimum) rather than the minimal "B" rating that I was expecting.

Once I had produced evidence from an independent expert witness that my windows were faulty, I found the Everest technical managers to be helpful and understanding. However, the battle should not have been necessary, and I remain most disappointed with the higher level legal personnel at Everest head office.
