General Comments

As online banking goes, Nationwide's was always about average, nothing special and with a few quirks but certainly not the worst on the market (and over the last few years I've tried most of the high-street banks + quite a few of the major credit card companies).

However, since introducing the chip+pin card reader the service offered has fallen, to the point that it's next to useless for me. No action can be carried out online without physical access to both a Nationwide (or compatible) card reader and your debit card. As a piece of technology I can see its value, but requiring its use at all times is completely overzealous. There is no point in an online service that requires access to dedicated hardware for simple services, such as transferring funds to another account. NatWest have introduced similar technology but with a much more sensible approach, requiring further authorisation before making major changes (for example creating a direct debit) but not for paying a bill to an existing payee.
