I originally took out a platinum Mastercard branded as "Churchill," which was affiliated to the car insurance company of the same name, and issued by Beneficial Bank. At about 17% APR, the interest rate was reasonable, but not the best around. This was in 2002.

Skip forward a few years and the affiliation with Churchill came to an end. Beneficial replaced the card with one of its own branding. Over the years their interest rate crept up a bit, but I never really got around to ditching them.

Skip forward another few years and Beneficial sell out to a company called "Aviemore Funding Ltd," which, according to the blurb from Beneficial are "a specialist credit card provider." . The APR also took another upward hike at this time.

Skip forward a few weeks and my new Marbles branded Mastercard arrives, administered by Aviemore and issued by Bank of Scotland PLC. I phoned them up to check what the APR was, and promptly paid off the full balance there and then (by debit card) when I was informed that it war 27.9%. The polite man didn't even bother trying to keep my custom when I told him it was way too high. The only thing I still have to do, at the time of writing, is to call them back in a few days to fully close the account as it will take a little while for the payment to reach my account. Given that other reviewers have had problems closing their accounts, I shall back-up my call with a recorded delivery letter.
