Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings Review

A good story line once you get past the disjointedness, fun features and witty banter

The battle system, format of the game.

Unlike the other mighty and mind-blowing games of this magnificent and ironically named series created by Square Enix (formally Square Soft), this small companion game takes you on a mild but addictive ride.
Revenant Wings, the sequel to the awesome Final Fantasy XII sees Vaan and Penello living their sky pirating dreams until tragedy strikes and a new adventure begins.
This latest instalment takes you to the sky continent of Lemures to unravel the mystery of Anima and The Eternal, with old and new friends.
Although the graphics are fantastic and the opening FMV promises a thrilling and action packed experience, I dont think the rest of the game lives up to that expectation. The game has been divided into ten chapters and sub-divided into various missions.
Instead of the usual and familier random battles with fiends or even the recently introduced Active Dimension Battle system, fights have already been decided. I find this makes levelling up extremely difficult and tedious, having to fight the same battles over and over again. To make the whole thing seem even more impossible, potions and phoenix downs don't seem to exist. The overall layout of the game leaves me wondering if Square Enix have converted to the inferior form of gameplay that is platform.
However if this game were to be released onto PS3 or Xbox360 it would be phenomenal. The banter is witty, the plot is full of twists and turns and you don't have to worry about losing MP! The whole concept of Revenant Wings fits in perfectly with the original, always linking back to it. It is the small features that entertain throughout, such as the naming of weapons and your ship, redecorating the sky saloon and watching the characters suffer Penelo's cooking.
Althoughin my opinion not worthy of being compared to the giants that are Final Fantasy VII, IX and X, it is in a completely league of its own when put together with other DS games.
