My son was playing Runescape before me and I happen to stumble across it while he was playing. I decided to chase it up further and see if it was "suitable" for a 13yr old at the time.
I noticed filters were in place that blocked certain sayings which was good, the game appeared to be well managed and after almost 2.5 years I have come to make a lot of both online and real life friends through the game and the gameplay has continued to be attractive, appealing and content constantly updated to keep it that way.
It should come with a warning though - like other mmorg games it can destroy what social life you "may" have had as you become absorbed into the matrix ! Highly addictive. Entertaining. Good for adults as well as teenagers. only bad point is hmmm highly addictive again. Real life often gets in the way of skilling !
