Good Points

A good lager that's got some real flavour. One of the better continental beers that are available. Only brewed in Germany, and not in the UK

Bad Points

The bottles are a little smaller than most bottled beers. There are other German lagers I prefer (eg Bitburger). It carries a premium image so you can pay through the nose for it in a lot of bars

General Comments

I'm not a big lager drinker, preferring a good bitter or even Guinness to most lagers, but Becks is a decent example of an imported beer, as it is only brewed in Germany, and not in the UK under licence (as most "continental" beers actually are such as Stella and Carlsberg) . It's still brewed under German purity laws if their marketing is to be believed, so only made with water, yeast, hops and barley. That means it shouldn't be full of chemicals, nor made up with other grains (like the American version of Budweiser which has all sorts of stuff in it. Consequently, it does have a good flavour.

The taste is refreshing and balanced, and works well especially in the summer when it is a real thirst quencher. It has a decent level of alcohol, so is ideal in bottles if you want to avoid getting too drunk, though the bottles do tend to be smaller than other bottled lagers which is a bit of a swizz (275ml compared to 330ml for most premium lagers). This, coupled to the fact that it carries a premium pricce tag to go with its premium image mean Becks is often an expensive option for a night out. All that art sponsorship they do doesn't come cheap!

It's also available on draught in some places, though I think it's mainly sperseded by their slightly less alcholic Vier, and it's available in cans at supermarkets. I can't comment on the canned variant as I haven't tried it, though beer in tins never seems to shake off its metallic after-taste which you obviously don't get in bottles.

I'd certainly choose it over a lot of beers, but there are also a lot of others that I prefer instead, so it isn't my first choicee but I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand
