My husband and I did a great trip across the length of NZ from north to south, beginning in Auckland and ending in Te Anau in Sep-Oct 2008. We drove the entire way (apart from across the Cook Strait where of course we took the ferry).

Throughout the trip, we rented our cars from Omega Car Rental. We rented 1 car in the North island (pick up in Auckland, drop off in Wellington) and another in the South island (pick up in Picton, drop off in Queenstown).

We didn't have the best experience with Omega rental in Auckland.

I had made all the car rental bookings directly through the Omega website. While making the booking, I specifically requested for a free pick-up service from our hotel in Auckland at 9am to take us to the car rental office. Once we reached Auckland, I called again the day before the rental began to re-confirm our pick-up from the hotel the next morning. The person at the Omega office in Auckland said that the car would arrive at our hotel by 9am the next morning, pick us up, bring us to the Omega office where we could pick up our rental car.

The next morning, there was no sign of the car. To cut a terribly painful, long story short, the car finally arrived at 11.30 am after we made 5 very expensive international calls from our roaming mobile phone to chase up Omega. The reason for the delay we were given was that the company was confused about our hotel's address and went to another hotel with a similar name - even though we had specifically given them our hotel address in writing through their website. I even had a print out of the confirmation e-mail sent to me by Omega when I made the booking which contained our hotel's address.

We did not find the staff very helpful On top of this, we were given a car that we feel was not up to standard , very old & rickety whose radio didn't work. We feel as a result of this we missed a tour we had booked later in the day in Waitomo (where we were driving to).

I wanted to share our experience and warn other travellers to re-confirm everything with Omega (especially our hotel address if you have asked for a pick-up) 1 day before the rental starts.

Our car in the south island was a lot better and the pick up in Picton was very smooth. But by this point I was re-confirming everything 5 times with Omega just to be sure. The drive through NZ was fantastic though - one of our best road trips ever. Miles & miles of empty road with drop dead gorgeous views. What a treat!
