last summer, our car broke down in cornwall. it was 8pm and i had a 4 year old and a 10 month old in the car. the AA sent a very charming member of staff to tow us home. it took him about an hour and a half to get to us which was fine as we expected this length of wait.

at 2am, the AA, having read the small print of our contract decided that they weren't going to tow us home, they'd tow us to the nearest garage to sort the car out. by this time, the children had been screaming since about 9pm and I was absolutely exhausted from that and lack of sleep.

we ended up in weston super mare in a very lonely, desolute garage having the car fixed. the mechanic then said my husband had to go to a different garage down the road to collect something for the car, so they disappeared. i then felt extremely vulnerable in the middle of nowhere with 2 children .

eventually the car was fixed and we were on our way at 4am!! to say we were tired is an understatement, yet we had another 3 hours drive home. i felt panicky and kept having to pull over as my concentration and vision were awful. thank god we got home in one piece.

to stay at a hotel and unpack and sort the kids out would have been difficult to do, but in retrospect itwould have been better than driving in those conditions. i had explained all this to the AA customer service who didn't seem to care about the situation at all. they didn't offer any advice or discuss what we should do and they were totally aware of our predicament. Even the original AA driver was fighting our corner,

I have now left AA breakdown service and found a much cheaper alternative. The AA used to charge us £150 a year, now we're with IC Breakdown who charge us £29 a year for the same service. Infact I asked IC Breakdown what they'd have done in that situation and they said "towed you the whole way home"!!!

The AA claim they're the 4th emergency service, we didn't feel this was the case.
