General Comments

Lately I've been travelling with many budget airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet. The only good deal I could get that fitted my schedule was with Thomson Fly to Tenerife just before Christmas 2008. I had booked well in advance and thought the price pretty reasonable. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole experience. I walked straight to the outbound checkout desk at East Midlands airport and my luggage was checked in within 2 minutes. I had a seat near the front of the plane and there was enough leg room for me - I'm 6' 1" and 17 stone so if there's enough for me there's enough for most people! Slight run way delay of about 15 minutes. The food was fine, the gin and tonic was better. Mama Mia! was the film - I hadn't seen it before and to my surprise quite enjoyed it - maybe it was the gin and tonic. Arrived at Tenerife on time. The inbound check-in was chaotic as it always is at Tenerife Sur - stood in the queue for over an hour while the usual camp bloke who was 'organising' the 5 or 6 queues shuffled people around and mostly put them in the queue in front of me. When I swapped queues my progress improved. Choice of seat was offered at the desk which was a pleasant surprise. Flight was delayed for around an hour and a half but it's a pleasant enough airport. Film was The Incredible Hulk - it passed the time! Crew informative and very friendly toward a couple in front of me with very young children. I've never enjoyed flying since a really dodgy flight to the Isle of Mann when I was 7 but I have to say this experience was one of the most pleasant. I think it's all about expectation. What I expect on a flight of this cost is to be basically comfortable and to be treated courteously - that's what I got. I'm also quite receptive to the mood of fellow travellers and I have to say it was so much more calm than the normal budget airlines - I believe this was because of the allocated seating and the professionalism of the crew. Even though people maybe don't realise it, it makes a huge difference. All in all a very good experience.
