Paid £500 in full for Aphrodites Lodge, Bownees on Windermere, before we went there (never again). Arrived a couple of hours after booking in time and the lodge was freezing - expected it to be warm as it was snowing at the time. Told heating was broken, was not given the option of another room and even though we needed to be out quite quick it was too cold to get ready and people were coming in and out of our room. Finally after approx 2 hours (we were frozen) they turned up with plug in heaters and we were advised by an engineer that a part was required that would not be available till the Monday. After what we had paid did not want the noise of the heater fans and also all the sockets would have been taken up. My husband asked for our Money back as the weekend had been ruined and also we were late meeting people we had arranged to meet. We were told to go to 21 The Lakes to speak to the Manager as this is the sister hotel. We were told there were no rooms there and I had to remind the lady that we had not even been apologised to - we were told we could have a free meal - not quite a warm room. Bearing in mind it was now about 5.30, we had arrived at 2.00 and we were meeting people at 6.30 (had not been showered or unpacked). Again we pleaded to get our £500 back and they refused, stating that they would advertise the room and if anyone came forward we could have it then - fat chance so late on a Saturday and in the snow. As we were desperate and had to meet people we went to find other accommodation and decided to claim our money back when we got home. After many, many letters and advise from Citizens Advice we never got out money back - we were offered another weekend at a discounted rate (no good when you would never step foot in the place again - plus discounted rate - why not free). We received very poor treatment, lack of manners and no compassion.
