Good Points

Looks, Handling, Chain Driven Camshaft (as opposed to a belt) on V6 models, Interior Design, Stock Ford Sound System is surprisingly good.

Bad Points

Performance isn't the best, odd sized tyres, can suffer from oil starvation if level too low, water pump fragile.

General Comments

The Ford Cougar is a sharp looking car, even 10 years after launch, but the stock items performance doesn't quite match the looks, although the car does respond favourably to some engine modifications, mostly by removing the in-built restrictions that Ford seem to incorporate into their cars, one such example of this is the standard exhaust system which is of poor design and very restrictive and if you are a petrolhead who likes to hear the musical qualities that an engine type such as the V6 can produce, I'm afraid the exhaust system doesn't lend itself to allowing such noises, it's very suppressed and muffled, fine however if you like your car to sound anonymous then you'll be fine! To see the best of the car you have to get it above 4000 RPM, then the car opens up and moves, below this though, the engine can feel rather limp and dead, rather disappointing for a V6 engined car (compared with the V6 Vectra I used to have), but the performance is the only gripe I have about this car, otherwise it is a beautiful car, when equipped with leather seats, it is a nice place to sit, ergonomics are excellent, feels sportier than a Mondeo to drive, rides low, handles superbly and the brakes are very responsive. Overall, The Cougar is a sporty looking car that drives better than it's Mondeo brethren, but has very average performance, even in V6 form, as stock, so unless you've been used to a small low powered hatchback, don't expect quantum leaps in performance and speed, I was quite disappointed initially, but I have removed a lot of the restrictions on mine (worded deliberately like this because the word 'tuned' is bandied about too readily and wrongly nowadays!) and it is now actually quite a decent mover, a major improvement on how it was when purchased.
