Good Points

Courteous, willing crew; excellent shows; no single supplement; fantastic beach barbecue on Catalina Island

Bad Points

Rather tired, small cabins; occasional shambolic tender service; inadequate arrangements for solo passengers to socialise; difficult fixed dining arrangements

General Comments

Dec 2008: It was my first cruise and my experience was positive on the whole. Some hardy cruisers compared the experience with Butlins and I can see what they meant: always a tedious quiz threatened when there was a lull, and a general downmarket feel about the clientele. It's horses for courses.
The passengers were mainly quite elderly, evidenced by the number of walking sticks. As a consequence, the dinner conversation would veer from "I can't be doing with spicy food" to "What on earth is that?" (sushi). Hardly stimulating. I switched from table to table illicitly to avoid the elderly bores.
Regrettably, dress standards for dinner are allowed to fall: I wonder at how many professional footballers (to judge from their England kit) can play with such expanded waistlines.
Nevertheless, it was occasionally good fun, with salsa and ballroom dancing, a good standard of shows, reasonable food and excellent service. Those with All-Inclusive arrangements did well for drinks, so if you can get it for about £150, it's a good deal.
I probably shan't go on Destiny again because I now have a basis of comparison. However, I recognise that I'll need to invest a little more than the good price I paid.
