Looking at the reviews the problems is Maglite not communicating how their products work!
The bulb is rated at 3w for both AA and C.D cells - so will draw the same current regardless. Bigger batteries = longer battery life.
Using a rechargeable AA for argument's sake rated at 1800mAH means that two batteries in series can run to provide 3v at 1800mAmps for one hour
A 3W led consumes 1 amp (1000 mAmps) at 3 volts so the torch should last about 1.8 hours only. Obviously this is a back of an envelope calculation and it sounds like the "shut off " rather than fade as the voltage drops is also annoying people. I _hope_ that for this sort of battery life it is VERY bright!
