Generally Northern rail offer a good service. I am not some one who uses the train that frequently recently but when I have used the service they are pretty reliable. One thing that could be improved is the quality of the trains. They are slightly better than the trains I used to use when I used to commute but they are very basic. When compared to train services I have used in other countries they are the nowhere near as good. The thing that lets Northern Rail down, and it is not their fault is the grotty miserable Victoria station they use. It is miserable and cold even in the heights of summer, when we have one that is.
Personally it was much better when we had British rail, maybe one day we will have a single high quality reliable train service, but maybe we will need the rail companies to be taken over by Japanese or French rail companies before that happens as their service is in a different league to our train system!!
