Tom H's Review of Clarion RD3

Overall Rating

4 stars
  • Value for money
    5 stars
  • Sound quality
    4.5 stars
Good Points

  • Clean, uncomplicated looking in-dash unit

  • Easy to use

  • Display wired into dashboard display - not distracting when driving

  • Tactile control stalk by steering wheel - easy to change settings without looking up or taking hands off the wheel

Bad Points

  • Manufacturer fitted - not likely to be straightforward if I want to replace it

  • Clarion brand not as widely available as brands like Sony or Panasonic - good luck in finding parts!

General Comments

My Clarion RD3 car stereo was the original model fitted when the car was manufactured. I decided not to bother replacing it as it worked totally fine.

The unit itself is tidy-looking. No over-abundance of chrome or aluminium swictches that do nothing but annoy and distract. The functions of each are easy to guess - perfect when passengers want to change the radio station and I can't be bothered shouting out instructions.

One disadvantage is that the unit is less easy to tinker with than retro-fitted units. Recently I looked into fitting a hard-wired iPod connector to the 5th radio pre-set button, but despite having got online instructions, I couldn't find the connector board at the back for love nor money. Annoying.

That said, I'm happy with my Clarion RD3. It's easy to use, has all the settings I need to enjoy my music, and doesn't confuse less technologically-astute passengers. Good all round!
