General Comments

I chose to hire a car from Kerry airport using Nova car hire based on cost (for a period of about 27 hours). The car rental company they were using was Irish Car Rentals (National/ Alamo Ireland ). The web voucher stated that after paying a deposit to Nova of 8.03 EURO, the balance I would be charged when collecting the car would be 43 EURO.
However the bill I eventually received also included 15 EURO plus 2.38 EURO taxes as a service fee for Irish Car Rentals, an environmental fee of 2.63 EURO and a fuel charge of 6 EURO (although I had returned the car with more fuel in it than when I had received it)
By contacting Nova via email (as requested by Nova following an initial phone call) I was told the fuel and environmental charges would be removed. However there was no sign of movement on the Irish Car Rentals service fee.
After phoning them, their service representative said this was a frequent problem their customers were having (the service fee was mentioned in the small print of the terms and conditions of the rental company) and she wished it was made clearer on their web site. However she said she would contact the rental company and see if out of the goodness of their heart they would waive the service fee on this occasion. She phoned me back later that day and said that the rental company had agreed to waive the fee and I should see my credit card credited within a week. (this was 3 days ago).
So far my credit card has been debited 53.46 GBP (debited 101.29 GBP and then refunded 47.83 GBP) by Irish Car Rentals, which at a EUR/GBP rate of 0.8184 amounts to 65.32 EUR, 22.32 EUR more than the agreed price. As the service fee including tax is 17.38 EURO, even if they refund me this, I shall still be about 5 EURO out of pocket. I am not sure where this difference is arising as the refunds just appear on my credit card account with no explanation. Perhaps they use a different exchange rate for refunds than the one they use for charges. Who knows!
I shall think twice in future before I rent a car through Nova Car Hire (or Irish Car Rentals National/Alamo for that matter)

    I've since received a further 19.19GBP from Irish Car Rentals, so at least I have got my money back!
