Superb all round package, you can buy £350 bikes with better wheels or forks or frame but you can't buy anything in this price range which is better on all counts. It's a very well balanced, competent bike which is capable of even some fairly tough offroad work. The XCR fork is just OK, but it's good enough that you won't hate it unlike most budget forks- it's so much better than a Rockshox Dart. It has SRAM X5 geartrain and full hydraulic brakes too, all attached to a strong but slightly heavy frame. Very good allrounder with no real shortfalls. This does mean it's not too upgradable- usually a budget bike will cut corners in one area, like the Cannondale F6 with its horrible forks and gears, so replacing those makes it a much better bike. The Kraken doesn't have any bad issues like this so you can't upgrade it easily by removing the drawbacks. This is NOT a criticism, the bike doesn't NEED upgrading like the Cannondale does. The freehub failed after a very short time- this was replaced under warranty with the upgraded part off the higher end Carreras so no harm done, but it's not a great sign. The tyres are TERRIBLE- they weigh over a kilo each, they're very slow, and they're not even very grippy (they're good in mud until they clog, which takes seconds, then they're like slicks) Budget to replace these immediately Some of the negative comments here are just ridiculous... One person said "the crank arm fell off". Well yes, it'll do that if you don't tighten it. Some people just don't know how to look after bikes, and are surprised when bits stop working, this is the same for any bike. The Carerra Kraken is a great mountain bike.
