1) When I bought the program on disk in September 2008, compensating for a slow dialup connection, the company shipped me a "personalized" version with the most recent av updates dated early July. Lots of other minor technical problems with the disk, such that most users would not have been able to use it to install the program. (I did user support at University of Hawaii in early 90s and have been director of Distance Education most of the past decade. Trust me on that. Not many people could have installed the program as shipped. In fact, anonymously buying AVG antivirus on disk would be a good place to begin a serious review.)

2) AVG v. 8 struggles to work with x64 Vista, and within a month developed fatal errors. Not correctable.

3) The FAQs are all seriously out of date, many referring to user interfaces that no longer ship and to program features that no longer exist.

4) Technical support -- zero: on paid subscriber side, weeks after a request for information or correction someone fires back a canned response that picked up on a single word or two, having nothing to do with the error reported.

Summary: AVG used to be a good app. Now it is far otherwise. This happens when companies grow faster than they can deal with.
