Milkshaker's review of Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5

“I have the 170bhp VW Golf V5 auto tiptronic 2002 mk4...”

★★★★☆

Good Points
Comfortable drive, good power, nice engine note, solidly made.

Bad Points
Have to be careful with speed bumps as suspension fairly stiff compared to average family car. Will drink fuel if you have a heavy foot, but not at all bad if you drive like a district nurse. Tiptronic gearbox allows you to change down gears in anticipation of overtaking which is handy, but refuses to go into higher gears unless you are at a minimum speed e.g. 4th gear is unattainable unless you are at least 24mph which feels a little too high if you are driving gently around town. Engine liable to pink a little if fuel is not super-unleaded.

General Comments
I have the 170bhp VW Golf V5 auto tiptronic 2002 mk4 model imported from Denmark with UK spec. I too have noticed vibration throughout the car as when the car is stationary and engine is running. It's a bit annoying but I can live with it. VW Slough were unable to explain - dissapointed in them. I had the car from brand new and the vibration used to be non-existant for the first 2 years or so. The vibration began to develop one autumn, and I think its slightly more pronounced during the winter than in the summer. The fuel mixture is fine and the car has been regularly serviced at VW. I'm wondering whether it could be engine mounts, gearbox mounts due to the amount of speed bumps in the area. Or I wonder whether it's related to some kind of imbalance developing due to it being a 5 cylinder engine. Otherwise its a pleasure to drive. Has anyone experienced a similar vibration issue and been able to resolve it?
