Bad Points

Need to use iTunes to sync it; lack of MMS; super-proprietary software

General Comments

There is no doubt that the Apple iPhone 3G is an amazing phone - the look and feel, responsiveness, application capability, graphics, email connectivity - all excellent. You'll never pick up a better phone to use.

It's shortcomings are actually external. This is my first foray into the Apple world, and there are a number of things I don't like about it. iTunes is an awful, buggy, sluggish, unintuitive piece of software. It attempts lots of background tasks when you don't want it to. It frequently crashes on me.

For me, if the iPhone was capable of syncing using ActiveSync, or some other lightweight sync too, I'd have given this a higher rating. But there is no alternative - Apple don't provide hooks in for users to create their own. This is the most critical part of it for me - Apple's view on lock-in. Everything you do with this phone has to go via Apple - and if you don't like the Apple way, you're stuffed. So the chance of me getting something like ActiveSync working is zero.

As I want to use this in tandem with my works laptop, I don't have the ability to install iTunes as it's viewed as 'entertainment' software. So I can't use it for work, basically.

So to summarise, a spectacular phone, let down by poor supporting software.
