Good Points

We ' ve had them for 20 years after over 30 with VW beetles I ' m talking about the front wheel drive 1979-1992 Opel Kadett series D and E AKA Vauxhall Astra MK 1 and 2- here are their good points Tough, reliable, will last and last and take a lot of abuse, neglect and rough handling on the way. -safe can take virtually any hard impact well. Very spacious and practical.

Bad Points

New water pump every 2yrs (without fail- ESSENTIAL!!!)
Eats wheel bearings
Rust from the underneath up- especialy around front and rear wheel arches
Door hinges are weak and too small for such heavy doors.

General Comments

Will go best with German parts this is fact- its 2 different cars Before German parts and after German parts are fitted you ' ll hear a lot of rubbish about this but it ' s true. The older 79-84 Kadett is easier fixed. Best engines (all years). Petrol-1.2 8vt (he best) 1.4 8v, 1.6 8v, Diesel-1.5 8v, 1.7 8v. Worst- turbo diesels, 1.3 petrol, 2.0gte any 16v petrol/diesel To sum up opal do the small bread and butter small family cars best and can be as good as any Toyota or even Honda with out the high parts prices. The Kadett can run on any cheap part but they run on German stuff the best and the parts won ' t cost that much more and in our long experience are always worth it.
