Good Points

The IDEA of a convenient and safe way to carry money abroad.
The leaflet describing it was also OK


Bad Points

Not tried elswhere but in Egypt it is not possible to see your balance at an ATM, you have to phone the UK. Which is not always possible when travelling.

Also it proved impossible access funds added after the initial amount loaded.


General Comments

The Post Office Travel Money Card has been a NIGHTMARE! - When puchased at the post office the staff I spoke to only knew half the story.

I purchased the card with £400 loaded onto it. When I had used much of this, I asked my parents to transfer more funds onto the card. This has to be done by visiting a post office and cannot be done over the phone by a third party. (Inconvenient and slow)
They added £200 and a further £100 a few days later, but several days later I was still unable to access any funds. By now I was getting hungry and panicky. A phone call to the Helpline revealed that after purchase there is some sort of credit check ,which having just left school , I failed as I have no credit rating. This results in the card being BLOCKED until passport etc are sent in. Being in Egypt at the time this was obviously impossible.!!
THE RESULT IS THAT ALL THE EXTRA MONEY LOADED ONTO THE CARD BY MY FOLKS CANNOT BE ACCESSED.
I am left up an Egyptian creek without a paddle and the post office don't seem to care a bit..

TAKE CASH, TAKE TRAVELLERS CHEQUES, TAKE ANYTHING BUT DON'T TAKE A POST OFFICE TRAVEL MONEY CARD.
