Bad Points

Dirty, smelly, self catering accommodation at Akti Beach, Paphos. Sold as 4* accommodation - didn't even reach 1*


General Comments

Receptionist (British) and rep (British) were both rude and unhelpful. Terrible attitude, no customer care skills whatsoever. In fact everything was our fault (according to them). We booked 4* self catering through Hays Travel and were expecting a lovely holiday in Cyprus. After flying during the night we arrived at Akti Beach at about 6am. Our apartment was situated in the older part of the complex. What a shock when we walked into the room - it was dirty, smelly, had definitely not been cleaned. The bathroom had faulty fittings with mould around the bath and sink. The patio looked out onto a tipping ground which was dusty and dirty and there was no way we were going to spend a week there. Reception offered us an alternative room, which was marginally better but still overlooking the tip and no patio. Rep was totally unhelpful and just stuck to his patter. He offered us an upgrade but after waiting in the foyer until 1pm, without being offered even a glass of water (waiting while he conducted the welcome meeting and sold excursions). When we asked for him to help, he told us he had a job to do and he couldn't drop everything for us. Funny, we thought we were his job, but he didn't agree - just kept telling us that we got what we booked through the travel agent. After waiting around for 6 hours we eventually got in a taxi and went to the nearest hotel we could find and booked in there. Venus beach hotel was lovely and went a long way to heal the scars of our first few hours in Cyprus. Will never book with Hays Travel again, as they sold this as 4* accommodation and will certainly never travel with Olympic - rude, awful attitude and no people skills at all.
