Bad Points

Car rented with previous damages.
Poor inspection at collection point.
No one to be found at drop off point to check the car.
Damage charges debited to our card without any notice.
Impossible to speak to someone other than the call centre.


General Comments

We rented a car from Hertz on May, 9th 2008 at Derry City Airport. We returned the car on May, 12th at the agreed time and location. No one was to be found either at the drop off point or at the reception desk inside the airport so we had to leave the car in the car park and the keys in the key box inside the airport. A previous damage to the car had been marked on the vehicle pre-inspection form when we had collected the car but we thought it was safe enough to leave the car there without having a Hertz representative to check it in front of us. And that was a big mistake which would have cost us.
More than a month later, on June 23rd we realised that a charge from Hertz had been debited to our card. Despite having provided Hertz with our contact details (address and phone number), I don't remember being notified of the charge, which left us in the position of not being able to object to it.
When I contacted Hertz asking for an explanation I was told they had to investigate our complaint and that it would take 7 to 10 working days. It actually took them a month and a half to get back to us saying that the charge had been applied in accordance with Hertz Terms and Conditions for tyre damages that were discovered upon return of the vehicle.
Part of the initial charge was refunded. This was the difference between the excess amount charged and the actual cost of repairing the car. This only happened after I contacted Hertz Customer Service to complain about it.
Nonetheless, I was not prepared to accept a partial refund only. The car was already damaged at the front left wheel when we collected it - as marked in the vehicle pre-inspection form - and this made me think that the damage to both wheels had already been made by someone else even before we rented the car and that the damage to the rear wheel had not been noticed on a previous inspection.
I contacted Hertz Customer Services to point this out and on several occasions I reiterated that I was not accepting the charges. They kept on telling me that they would reopen the case.
It seems that there is little I can do to get my money back but I will never rent a car with Hertz again and I strongly advise anyone not to do it either.
