Blackpool itself is good
Pontins
We stayed at Pontins Blackpool for 5 nights in August 2008. First I must add it was a free holiday for 7 nights won from a newspaper comp.
It was a long drive from N. Ireland but kids were excited. When arriving at Pontins I first thought my Sat Nav was playing up and had taken us to a Ghetto! Really it was that bad. We checked in and drove to our Hut (sorry Chalet) - two bedroom Classic to be exact. The first thing we noticed was the smell - damp horrible and musty. The carpet was disgusting, thick with dirt, probably the same carpet since 1950. The walls were dirty and the door handle between the 2 bedrooms fell off. Thankfully the bed linen was clean, however beds were very uncomfortable. Do not expect any soap or in fact anything! This is as basic as it gets. I would not have cared so much if it was clean but it was dirty, really grim...
You are not supposed to park your car inside the site, but it is a free for all with cars everywhere. The complex itself was horrible, cigarette butts and rubbish everywhere, potholes, just really run-down. It seems like they've decided the site is beyound repair and are just happy to take money from the Regular bookers and first time visitors. It is the latter I am trying to help aviod making a very bad holiday choice. Site is beside airport and planes are noisy, I thought first night was an air raid! The Pontins brochure had no pictures of the site at all - ask yourself why.
The food was OK, as long as you like frozen chips and everything fried, although there is a section were they will make you a fresh omelette which was nice. I think I saw about 3 Bluefleeces (sorry bluecoats) so cannot comment. They did have a big crocodile costume person waltzing around the food hall enticing kids, with some bloke following behind selling toy cocodiles to their parents while they are eating. There is a quad bike track were you can hire a quad to race round a weed covered potholed track, with a hilarious sign disclamer that basically states that "If you crash and die it is your own fault". The place was packed and Sands resturant is like a big school hall, basic at it's best. Did not dare go near the swimming pool.
I know this holiday was free, but take my advice if you are thinking about a family holiday to Blackpool, do not go to Pontins, you might regret it.
Blackpool itself was good fun, pleasure beach is great and beach is fantastic.
