General Comments
I have been waiting to see this musical since forever! So when the time came and I went to New York to see it, I was quite emotional and incredibly excited!
I have seen many musicals and play since I study theatre studies at school, but this one was just in the lead, way ahead along with elements of Blood Brothers and with the magical Billy Elliot.
Firstly I must mention the staging, very magical, interesting and exciting, loved it.
Foremost, the cast! The cast! Such a strong strong cast, I honestly cannot find any flaws with such a group of talented, strong and passionate set of individuals.
I saw Kerry Ellis as Elsaba and Kendra Kassebaum as Glinda, they were absolutely incredible, in particular Kendra was very very good.
Despite knowing the words, every word was pronounced brilliantly, the character of Elsaba was played very subtly but very very well, a very clever piece of writing.
In particular the costumes and elaborate staging and set really stood out for me. Every scene has costumes and setting designed to promote whatever theme was discussed in that particular scene.
Popular was done very very well, Kendra acted very casually and raw to the audience which was amazing to experience.
The singing was top notch, not a note was off, their voices synced very well together.
The story is cleverly developed with elements of raw emotion and comedy (but not in the very simple and unoriginal comedy you see in most musical-cheap laughs) very cleverly linked to the Wizard of Oz story (explaining the existance of the tin man, lion and scarecrow).
Undoubtably the best musical performance, in therms of voice was the end scene. The scene which made me (to my suprise!) burst out in tears from just the pure genious, emotion and power involved was definately the 'Defying Gravity' scene, before the interval, absolutely stunning class A broadway, incredible and mesmorizing, captivating.
I really would reccomend everyone to see this before they die, it is incredible and very powerful.
Describe it in one word?
"Stunning"
