General Comments

Scout is 10 months and we have had him since he was 12 weeks. Our previous dog, a cocker spaniel, passed away a year ago. Scout is a really fantastic dog and has become a really important part of the family. A real character and great fun, loveable but independent minded as well. He will go off in the house to find his own space a lot and is not constantly following you around like our cocker was. He needs plenty of exercise and we try to walk him for at least 3 miles a day but he could go much further. Amazingly agile - he can climb anything. We do not find him greedy and he might beg a little but does not persist and just goes off and does his own thing.
He does shed a lot even though we had him professionally groomed (stripped) a few weeks ago. He is extremely friendly to everyone including other dogs - probably too much. Very clean and does not smell even after getting wet. Great traveller in the car. Not destructive around the house now although when younger did destroy a wicker chair and tore up the stairs carpet! - better now though.

Bad Points (I would stress that many of these are due to our failure to persevere with training)
!) Cannot be trusted off the lead and if he escapes he will not come when called. Unbelievably fast and impossible to catch.
2) Jumps up on people and gets very excited when visitors come to the house.
3) Digs holes in the garden.
4) Can be very stubborn.

He is the best, most loveable and fun dog we have ever had. However if you are considering one you have to realise Borders are unique and and serious dogs. They are bred to hunt and are extremely energetic but have that loveable side as well. There is no point in owning a dog like this if you are going to have to leave him/her alone all day - they are active and need stimulation.
