General Comments

If you're thinking about purchasing a Dell PC, read on. I recently purchased a XPS 420. My second PC from Dell. Now, I believed the XPS 420 came with an integrated Sound Blaster audio card/hardware. My order clearly states:

Sound Cards: Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy ADVANCED HD software

But yet, after trying to record my stereo mix output, I realised I had been given a Sigmatel integrated sound card, with Sound Blaster software to control/administer it. It could not record the stereo mix.

I contacted Dell about this issue, but nothing has been done as of yet. They did not seem willing to except that their product description may appear misleading. I asked:

1. Is my sound card software integrated?
2. Does my order mention Sigmatel?

They apparently refused to answer my questions with either a yes or no response.

Second Issue - my graphic card driver fails. Sometimes it recovers, sometimes it does not and then I have to reboot (what I was working on is now lost, of course).

OK, this may not be entirely their fault, but after some Googling I realised I was not alone. There were others who were experiencing the same problem. Dell suggested I try fixes they found on the web?! These fixes do not appear to be documented on Dell's web site. I felt as though they wanted me to be an unpaid engineer or guinea pig.

They said this problem is coming because of conflict between the generic drivers getting installed by Windows update and the ATI graphic drivers, which does not make sense to me because that would mean all I would have to do is update the drivers, which I have done at least twice since owning the PC.

My point it is, it looks to me as though Dell knew about this problem, but yet they still sell the XPS 420 with the same configuration. Wouldn't it be a good idea to change the graphic card setup or create a fix for the problem? But they haven't, according to the Dell engineer. Remember they recommend Vista. So if that's the problem, why recommend an operating system that conflicts with their setup?

So, if you're thinking about purchasing a Dell PC, think long and hard about it. If I could do it all again, I would not purchase from Dell.
