General Comments

I thought NTL were poor, but British Gas really are worse. I had the misfortune to have dealings with them in two properties I have occupied.

In the first case I was unaware British Gas were going to supply me, I never asked for it! The first I knew of it was a letter in the post welcoming me to them, when i hadn't spoken to them or had a visit at my door. I immediately rang British Gas and explained the situation and cancelled the switch. I then reported British gas to Ofgem who found no wrong doings! It took me three months.

The second case was a problem with estimated bills when the house had not used gas!

I lived in a three up three down end terrace property which had electric heating, electric cooker, electric fire (you get the picture). There was an old gas meter in the house but nothing was connected to it, and it was turned off. British Gas despite me telling them repeatedly that the house was all electric, and giving regular readings that showed no use, refused to believe me, and sent me estimated bills addressed to 'the occupier' based upon previous use (what use?) and began threatening me with court action if i didn't pay them. I refused to pay them as they were only addressed to 'the occupier' (previous house owner had lived there for five years) and refused to give my name.

I arranged with British Gas a date for a meter reader to turn up and booked the day off work. I waited in all day and nobody knocked on my door or showed up, so I ran British Gas to ask where their meter reader was. They said a reader had turned up and knocked and I hadn't opened the door. I explained this wasn't true, my sofa was next to the front door itself so I would have heard them, and I had no card through my door declaring their visit. They still refused to believe me and sent me another estimated bill for over £500.

At this point I took legal advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau who offered my guidance and a letter template to send, that would clearly declare my side of things and I enclosed a photo of the meter with reading and date on it. By sheer 'co-incidence' 5 days later I had a knock on the door when I was due to leave for work, and guess what a meter reader was standing there and introduced themselves, and explained they 'had an appointment' to read my meter. I showed them the meter and explained the property didn't use any and finally the issue was resolved.

Take my advice, Never ever go with British Gas.
