PaulR8962's review of Michelin Energy

“I have had Michelin Energy tyres on my Golf 1.4s since...”

★★★☆☆

written by PaulR8962 on 31/07/2008

Good Points
Seem to be ok most of the time

Bad Points
Tyre squeal, even at very low speeds, some out door carparks and everyone looks thinking you are driving like Starsky & Hutch.

General Comments
I have had Michelin Energy tyres on my Golf 1.4s since I bought it with 14,000 miles on the clock. At 30,000 miles I now need to replace the front at less than 3mm and the backs are just under 5mm.

I have just started phoning for prices and I was shocked at the cost of these tyres. I had the impression that these were cheap tyres, probably subconciously due to their performance. I rated them at 5 as I did not really have an opinion on them, until I found out the price, now I think they are overated and over priced.

As for economy, I do not know. On average I was only getting between 31-33 mpg, or maybe 35 on a long run. Although I do drive fast I do not rev excessively as I am used to driving diesel TDi's. Due to the high petrol prices I have started to coast (putting the car into neutral) and am now getting 38 to 40mpg.

If these are energy tyres, there is one point I can not understand, When I put the car into neutral going downhill, some very steep, the car always slows down. Surely this can only be down to the friction of the tyres impeding the progress of the car. How can that be energy saving.

Unfortunately I do not have another car or other tyres to test this fact.

Mattwi's Response to PaulR8962's Review

My polo used to slow down rolling down hills too, even on energy saver tyres, but my laguna and clio will roll far easier and far further with the clutch in, and the laguna uses sports tyres.
