General Comments

We hired a car for 8 days in August 2007 from Tottenham Branch. We had been hiring from them for a while with no problems, in fact we had been impressed. The car had scratches and chips on it which were marked on the sheet. We paid to reduce our excess to £200. Wise move . They collected the vehicle from outside our house. They said we didn't need to come with them, but if there was a problem they would be back. Within seconds the doorbell rang and we were shown a 4" surface scratch on the passengers side rear wheel arch. It had not been there 1 hour earlier when we walked past the car. They informed us that they would take the £200 excess straight away and any refund due would be made when the scratch had been repaired. This would be in about 2 weeks. Several weeks, phone calls, and letters later we were told that actually there was no refund, because the 4" surface scratch had cost £690 to repair. The "evidence" produced was a repairers estimate which had on it several items for work carried out to other areas of the car, including the opposite side of the vehicle. We highlighted our scratch repair item (which they had in fact put an asterisk next to) for £29 labour, and asked for the return of the balance of our money. They suggested that we had not understood the report and that we were simply quoting the hourly labour rate. We were actually quoting directly from their report which was quite clear and said that our work had taken 1 man hour= £29.00. This seemed about right for the small scratch. With our money safely in their bank account we were in a weak position so we contacted BVRLA convinced that they would order 1car1 to repay our money. On the contrary, they could not see any items on the report which in their opinion did not relate to our scratch......not even the items on the other side of the car!? We are still going to pursue this. We see from various websites like this one that lots of others have had a very similar experience, some with the same branch. Writing to BVRLA was a waste of time and just delays matters. We suggest you do not take these people on trust. Inspect the car with them at the end of the hire, and do not let the car out of your sight until they drive the car away. They have lost a regular customer.
