Reliable online banking.
Hidden communication tool on major fee changes (international ATM usage is 2%, same as many credit card cash advance transaction fee). Terrible FEE if you plan to travel anywhere and use your ATM card. Most online bank have no charge for limited use of ATM, or a flat fee. But 2%?
I am traveling, and the idea of having my bank account online was quite convenient. However, after signing up with ING USA in Summer 2007, with the understanding that there's no ATM fee for withdrawal, I was in for a shock just yesterday (22nd July 2008). I was charged 2% for every transaction withdrawn from an ATM (traveling in Thailand at the moment), with my fee being about 19 USD for taking out my own money from an ATM. A call to customer service and to someone claiming that they're a manager, where he told me that they have email out a recent terms & conditions change that ING will now charge 2% for every international ATM transaction. The supposed email was sent on 2nd April, and for the life of me, I couldn't find it in my archive Gmail (where everything is saved). He basically told me that it's the customer obligation to read and know what ING terms & conditions were, and when they change them, even if you have receive the email notification or not. Of course, I found every email that ING sells mortgage, but not the one that announce a huge FEE policy change. And, since he has no power to reverse the charge, he's quite content to let me close my account and go somewhere else. SO I DID!
