Well, 20% of the premium is automatically allocated to the RSPCA, so if you wish to make a contribution to them, then buying their pet insurance is one way of doing so. However. bear in mind that 20% of £350.00 is £70.00. Benefits insured are o.k.
You cannot opt out of the 20% contribution, and this makes their insurance pretty expensive.
My RSPCA Pet Insurance policy was underwritten by AXA and excludes a fair number of breeds altogether. They also operate a "selected breeds" system, this means that certain breeds pay a much higher premium than others. These are amongst others Great Danes, Greyhounds, Pyrenese Mountain Dogs and St Bernards. (Premium for a 3 year old Greyhound, depending on post code, around £500.00). This makes this insurance very unattractive for owners of these breeds. Therefore, if you contemplate getting a quote, download their policy document and check whether your dog is an excluded or "selected" breed. German shepherds are amongst the "selected" breeds, but for them, they only apply a higher excess.
