Dirk C. Reinken.'s review of Nikon Coolpix 800

★★★★★

Good Points
Great flexibility of options in manual mode. Feels good in hand, very pleased with quality output. Macro phenomenal. Battery life better than average. Good flexibility with lens add-ons. Very pleased with low-light photography without the flash. Adjustable ISO from 100-400 (including automatic) and light metering.

Bad Points
No USB transfer -- Skip the serial and get a CF reader. Manual not very helpful for novice (read online reviews for more helpful information). No external flash attachment. Battery door flimsy, lens cap too easily lost. Be VERY careful of getting camera wet (probably true of all digitals). Software and case useless -- paying for the extra Coolpak (case, battery charger and batteries, and filters) probably worth it.

General Comments
I am new to digital photography, having primarily used "Push Here, Dummy" cameras. I've wanted to learn more and digital finally got me to do it because of instant results. The flexibility with the CP800 (for the money) and the quality of the shots makes this an excellent intro camera. I chose it over Kodak because of its better low-light results and I haven't been disappointed. Body design could have been better and accessibility to batteries and CF card needs improvement, but the feel is great.

After a few trials and experimentation, I basically feel like I am a novice expert. However, I already long for the ability to adjust exposure and aperture settings, which the 800 does not allow.

Check online resources for purchases - significant price reductions are available, especially now that the 990 is out. Given the vulnerability of digital cameras, look for a seller that has a 30 day unconditional warranty so that you have the opportunity to get used to the "care and feeding" of your camera.
