The book is amazing in the explanation of the importance and value of "metaphor" and the exploration of connecting to clients through this manner of revelation process was intriguing. The discussion of the unconscious mind capable of separate awareness, response, and positivity was especially revealing to me.
This is a difficult subject for the unexposed reader. It helps to have a background in psychology as well as an experiential base in working with all types of personalities. Sometimes it is difficult to extrapolate to pedagogy as he does not actually address this area specifically. I think a workbook or second volume would have been helpful but I am certain that somewone will pick up the torch.
Revisiting Erickson after graduate studies, I have found a great many aspects of his metaphorical approach to be very relevant to the field of education. Reaching out to the ostensibly un-reachable has been an educational challenge for years. As I do research for my own book, suggestions for simple but effective strategies for bridging resistant communication between students/teachers and between parents/teachers, administators/teachers, students/students have begun to arise for me as Erickson makes it clear that clues and solutions are evident if one is capable of looking deeply and carefully. I am excited to read more and delve into further research connecting these concepts into educational applications
