Having purchased a policy with a "protected no claims" I had to make a claim after an accident in which I was the innocent party. I was told that my no claims would be protected provided they recovered their costs from the other, foreign driver, but if they did not recover the costs - and they were very reluctant to even try - I would lose my no claims of many years standing. When moving insurers, I had the devil of a job getting evidence of my no claims from them, no renewal notice having been sent.
