When you get to open and activate your account the debit card allows you to withdraw cash free from abroad.
Bad Points
Getting to open the account, applied to open an account online over 2 weeks ago and I'm still waiting to recieve a confirmation letter, having not yet recieved this I went into the manchester cross street branch where one assistant was neither friendly or helpful. Also ringing to inqire so far have been on hold for 45 mins without getting through to someone to discuss my account and getting it activated. When i finally got through to someone they took my reference number and put me on hold without telling me and there proceeded to tell me conflicting information from what i'd been told by other staff in the branch and other people i had spoken to on the phone! I actually need this account to go away but if it hadn't had been urgent or neccessary, I would have most definitly taken my business elsewhere, they don't seem to rate new customers very highly at all!
General Comments
I would only recommend using Nationwide if you start to open your account at least 3 months in advance before travelling, if the purpose of opening the account is for free cash withdrawls abroad. I applied with a month to go and it looks like I won't be recieving my card in time, therefore useless to me as I will be away then! Looks like ill be using travellers cheques. For this reason I wouldn't recommend nationwide due to the time it takes to open an account, waiting times on the phone and some staff (as other staff dealt with in the Piccadilly branch were more than helpful).
