The ambiance and decor are excellent and I imagine staying here would be very comfortable.
The service generally seemed too familiar and casual although a new waiter who is properly trained looked after us very well indeed. However, I thought he was the exception. The wine list, while full of quirky notes, is overly long and far too ambitious for Hereford diners. It also needs to include a few more half bottles.
I have eaten at the Castle House on 2 occasions 3 months apart. I vowed that I would not return following a really ghastly family meal - interminable delays between courses, inattentive service - no-one seemed in charge- and ordinary food at very high prices. An invitation to dine with friends took me back again and, to be fair, it was greatly improved primarily because of A rack of lamb was excellent - pink and succulent and other dishes were well received by the other diners.
The problem is that the Castle House hasn't made up its mind what it is trying to be foodwise. It purports to offer "fine dining" but this ambition is not reflected in the menu which is a little pedestrian e.g ribeye and chips, chicken breast with chorizo. So the standard of cooking doesn't yet justify £35-40 for 3 courses. I feel it is not good value for money.
