Looks, practicality and finish.
No underscoring of shelves to prevent shelf sliding off shelf -supports, eg when removing heavy books, sliding a large object , pulling out LPs, etc. A small but nevertheless important point.
My long suffering wife always considered my DIY Contiboard shelving units in our lounge as beyond the pale, totally unacceptable eyesores! Relief was nigh now that she had discovered Neville Johnson!
The designer's visit produced a layout which fulfilled all her aspirations: disposal of despised existing shelving; accommodation of innumerable LP records; incorporation of a wide-screen home cinema system; discrete housing of many HiFi and television components (together with the necessary concealment of any interlinked cabling) and also the display of numerous ornaments, photos, books, etc. Our ideas were efficiently transposed to the drawing board. It was looking good but how much would it cost?
A quality product, individually tailored to our specification and requirements, naturally did not come cheaply. This expenditure was justified because "You only live once"!
The surveyor efficiently covered the fine detail, the accurate measurement, the potential problems and pitfalls. Delivery went according to plan and installation was trouble free - the fitter, so conscientious and conspicuously proud of his work and attention to detail.
Any premature fears that the size of our project would be overpowering, vis- -vis the room size were soon dispelled once it was in situ. Looking back at the "before" photos, we now realise what a hodgepodge our living room really had been. Now, it has style, a system, and a continuity which is reflected in its quality. Expensive, maybe, but well worth it if you can afford it.
The final word should remain with the fitter, who had to return to finalise a minor cosmetic omission by which time the shelving had been commissioned, become organised and fully operational. His initial, unsolicited reaction upon seeing the finished product in use (regardless of his Neville Johnson product familiarity) was "Now that's the business!"
A proud endorsement of his own skills maybe but proving that the final product had that certain cachet, finish and finesse.
